To the cinephile, film is more than a form of entertainment, since they see films through more critical eyes. The filmmakers

As viewers get increasingly invested in the protagonists and their stories, viewers get more immersed into hypothetical
examples, leading to an entertaining audience experience. Enough of the protagonists personality needs to be depicted in the
introduction, then the rest of the hypothetical example has a logical progression as the audience gets to know the
protagonist more and more. The viewer wants to see how the protagonist (main) character, as well as supporting characters,
evolve, just as humans do in real life.


That is, responding emotions are similar to the plot, characters, and events prompting them, which are common in certain
genres. Like all affective responses to fictional worlds, spectacle-based emotions may occur even as we read fiction, but
they are conspicuously competing in the movie medium against affective responses that are driven by plot and characters, as
well as by empathy.


We may turn to movies to escape from feelings, or we may turn to movies that help us relate to, experience, and work through
those emotions. Sometimes, when we are sad, we actually want to watch sad movies, because we are trying to connect with those
emotions. Or, if you are feeling sad, you want to watch a sad movie, so that you are really allowing yourself to feel that
emotion on a deeper level, hoping that it will validate, process, and pass that emotion.


Or if you are feeling sad, you want to watch a sad movie so that you can actually allow yourself to experience that emotion
at a deeper level, in the hope of validating, processing and moving through that emotion. If your brain can do this, you will
feel nothing about that character when watching a movie; you will experience no emotions and no struggle for or against that
character; you will not cry, or be angry, or sad, or even feel attraction for that character; and when that character dies in
a movie, you will not cry. Second, humans use film preferences to convey aspects of their personalities – this may occur
either mindfully or unconsciously, and in a more or less direct way.
